This fall, AFG sponsored a booth at the Wellfleet Oyster Festival on Cape Cod to exhibit high-quality textile crafts made by Georgian women and children who are taught by the Georgian Textile Group. 95% of these beautiful handmade crafts were sold, raising over $7,000 for the Georgians who made them.

American Friends of . . . Erekle and Nana

Our names are Nana and Erekle. We are both first-year students at the Institute of Ecology and Decorative Gardening in Tbilisi, and are studying to become landscape designers, a new profession in Georgia. We are sure that this will lead to our becoming employed.

American Friends of . . . the Georgian Textile Group

Textile artist Nino Kipshidze founded the Georgian Textile Group (GTG) to overcome the isolation of Georgian artists and to promote their work abroad. Small grants, from AFG and others, have helped GTG to further these goals. In 2008, they will participate in the 2008 Sante Fe International Folk Art Market.

Strong Partnerships Make a World of Difference... the State Ballet of Georgia

The State Ballet of Georgia featuring its Artistic Director, and AFG Advisory Board Member, Nina Ananiashvili, will tour the U.S. in February and March of 2008. Dates include the Brooklyn Academy of Music (Feb. 27-March 2) and many other venues nationwide.

Wine, Worship and Sacrifice: The Golden Graves of Ancient Vani

For the first time, archeological finds from Georgia have been brought to the U.S. “Wine, Worship and Sacrifice: The Golden Graves of Ancient Vani” is at the Smithsonian’s Arthur M. Sacker Gallery (until February 24) and at NYU’s Institute for the Study of the Ancient World (March 12 – June 1).
