Parents’ House
In addition, AFG has helped finance the building of a Parent’s House for families during the year-long treatment process in Tbilisi. The house, modeled on the international Ronald McDonald House program, allows families to live in comfort and dignity during this intensive and intrusive treatment. Families will be able to stay in the Parents’ House beginning in April 2010.
The Parents’ House project was begun several years ago by the Cordaid Foundation of the Netherlands. The Parents’ House is situated next to the Children’s Republican Hospital. Well equipped kitchens on all three floors were funded by the pharmaceutical company, GlaxoSmithKline which was coordinated by the U.K. office of Project HOPE. AFG raised additional funds in 2009 with the wonderful support of a gala event hosted by the American Chamber of Commerce in Tbilisi.
“When I visited the children in the Hematology-Oncology Center during one of my trips to Georgia, I was asked by Manana Chubaniidze and Gocha Mikiashvili to help them to build a Parents’ House next to the children’s clinic. I saw the exhausted parents trying to lie down during the day to get some sleep in their children’s hospital rooms. I would like to thank all those who had a hand in making this possible under the wonderful direction of Tamar Javakhadze.”
Needs
Ongoing support for children with leukemia in Georgia is needed. Every year approximately 15 children require radiation therapy, which is not available in Georgia. Additional infusion and perfusion pumps are needed to help administer accurately chemotherapy to the children. Living conditions need to be improved in the Hematology-Oncology Center in the Children’s Republican Hospital.
Funds are needed to continue to improve and enrich the lives of the children while they undergo chemotherapy – art therapy, puppet theaters, schooling and treats are all part of our program to make their stay in Tbilisi better.
AFG will also need to help with raising funds toward running costs of the Parents’ House.
