AFG Purchases Medical Equipment for Hematology-Oncology Center

AFG fundraising increased in 2007 when we raised over $40,000 during a gala event in Tbilisi. Those funds were used to buy vital equipment and medical supplies for the children, as well as improve the infrastructure at the leukemia treatment center, the Hematology-Oncology Center at the Republic Hospital for Children. The event was held in cooperation with the US Embassy and was supported by the local and international business community. Well-known Georgian artists also donated artwork to help AFG raise money for the children.

The $41,215 raised during the AFG Gala – the first event of its kind in Georgia – allowed us to finance an art therapy program for the hospital’s young patients, buy medicine and equipment for the hospital and fund one child’s radiation treatment -- 11 year old Sandro Khavlashvili – at the Freiburg Clinic in Germany.

AFG’s accomplishment:

AFG bought ten perfusion and six infusion pumps ($27,200) – equipment that accurately administers chemotherapy to children with leukemia and lymphoma. An additional $2,800 purchased 10 blood transfusion bags.

Other funds were used to improve the quality of the children’s lives and help off set some of the tremendous financial burden families – many of which are already living in poverty – have during their year-long stay at the hospital. Funds also paid teacher salaries for AFG’s art therapy program at the hospital.
