American Friends of . . . Giorgi
“My name is Giorgi. I’m three. Mommy said before I was born she lived in a big building that was an orphanage. We live with other kids who are my friends and their Mommies. Mother Antonina plays with me. I’m going to kindergarten now.”
When Marusya visited with Giorgi and the other children at the Shelter for Single Mothers in Bediani she was delighted to see the warmth and affection between the nuns and the mothers and their children.

Giorgi lives at Shelter for Single Mothers in Bediani |
Years ago, desperate single women, pregnant or already mothers with small children, appealed to Abbess Mariam’s convent in Tbilisi for sanctuary; most of them had been abandoned by their families or were victims of abuse. With AFG’s help, Abbess Mariam brought the women to Bediani where she started the Shelter for Single Mothers.
Today, Mother Antonina and her nuns run the Bediani Shelter for Single Mothers and teach the single mothers how to care for themselves and take responsibility for their children. Learn more about the shelter or about how you can help.
