Dear friend,

We would like to take this opportunity to update you on recent events in Georgia and AFG’s response.

Since April 2025 the Georgian Parliament has passed amendments to several laws in order to restrict foreign influence in Georgia.  Changes to the Grants Law now require government approval for grants from foreign donors and impose significant fines on grantees that accept money without approval. The Foreign Agents Law, meanwhile, has been extended in ways that further impact Georgian organizations and entities that receive foreign aid. These new laws require that AFG reexamine how we send aid to Georgia.

As these new laws go into effect, radically altering the landscape for NGOs in Georgia, AFG will take a step back to consider how to best accomplish its mission in the future. In the coming months, we will be exploring the new landscape and developing strategies for negotiating the road ahead.

In light of these developments, Nino Japaridze has stepped down, and we welcome Susan Sidamon-Eristoff as acting President while we seek to understand these new realities.

Susan is a graduate of Duke Law School and a practicing attorney in Washington, DC. Her grandfather, Constantine Sidamon-Eristoff, founded AFG, and she has long supported AFG’s work. Susan has served on AFG’s Advisory Board and has organized a number of highly successful AFG networking events in the Washington, DC area.

AFG will always work for the good of the Georgian people.  We hope you will stay with us on the journey ahead and continue your support as we plan a way forward.

Thank you for your support!
